This is a tricky encounter, but I will take my chances that Sandown’s stiff finish can offset any sluggish start from the gates, and TRIBAL CHIEF must come into the equation here. This individual is very talented on his day, and a stiff 1m could be absolutely spot-on for him. He ran a cracking race in the circumstances when runner-up on seasonal reappearance at Newmarket. After his customary tardy start, he really picked up in the closing stages and fairly hit top gear inside the hard yards in order to pick up the silver medal. The experiment over 10f back-fired when weakening to finish well beaten at Longchamp last time out, and a strongly run 1m looks much more his bag. Harry Davies is on board for the David Menusier team, and keep your eyes on the weather – the more rain, the merrier for this 4-year-old who could easily have more to offer off a mark of 91, especially if the ground ends up on the slow side.

Balon D’or e/w – 2.10 Chester

Balon D’or

BALON D’OR has some lovely form on the Roodee and can’t be dismissed, down in class and with a handy draw on this occasion. He was drawn in the car park when getting stall 12 over course and distance last time out in a race that was deep enough in any regard. He’s in stall 3 and in an easier race, so he can easily make his presence felt from an each-way point of view. From a mark just 1lb higher than last successful, he could be capable of springing a little upset here with the Hugo Palmer team in good form at the moment, operating north of 20%.

Star Of Mehmas – 2.40 Sandown

Star Of Mehmas
Age: 3 | Weight: 9-2 | J: R L Moore | T: R Hughes | OR: N/A
5/2

This looks like a golden opportunity for STAR OF MEHMAS to get back in the winners’ enclosure. The filly was very productive in her 2-year-old campaign as she rose through the ranks, winning three races on the bounce, including at Listed level on her final start as a Juvenile. She has hit the crossbar so far this term, perhaps not quite seeing out 6f at Chelmsford on her comeback, and then she did everything but win when beaten on the line at York last time out, where she kept finding more on the front-end, only to be denied by a head. A track like Sandown should see her in even better light, and there will be no excuses from Stall 2 with Ryan Moore in the saddle. She doesn’t have many miles on the clock and should still have plenty more to offer at this level. It is hard to boot her out of the frame, and this Richard Hughes-trained individual looks to have major claims of notching another success.

Grey Cuban e/w – 2.45 Chester

Grey Cuban
Age: 4 | Weight: 9-9 | J: Jason Hart | T: H Palmer | OR: N/A
6/1

GREY CUBAN struggled from a poor draw last time out, but there is plenty of optimism coming into this race where stall one offers no excuses from that inside berth – and this two-time course and distance winner has a great chance of enhancing his already excellent record at this track. He has now dropped back to his last winning mark, and underfoot conditions will be spot on. Jason Hart is in the saddle for this 4-year-old who can serve it up to his rivals here. It is a wide-open race, and he shouldn’t be far away.

Alsakib – 3.00 York

Alsakib
Age: 5 | Weight: 9-2 | J: James Doyle | T: A M Balding | OR: N/A
9/4

ALSAKIB gets the vote in what is a small but select field for this listed assignment. Five horses are due to go to post, and there isn’t much to separate the ‘big four’ in the market, but this race could be perfect for Alsakib. The Andrew Balding team have really hit top stride in the last couple of weeks, and this race could be coming at the perfect time for the son of Kingman. The 5-year-old shaped as though he needed the run when down the field over course and distance on his seasonal reappearance – and that was in a Group 2, so should find this much easier to cope with, as a previous Group 3 victor himself. He has winning form at the track and is versatile in regards to underfoot conditions so he has a lot of boxes ticked. James Doyle takes the ride, it wouldn’t be a shock to see this combination back in the winning groove in what is a cracking little race.

Chiringita e/w – 4.25 Sandown

Chiringita
Age: 3 | Weight: 9-9 | J: J P Spencer | T: D M Simcock | OR: N/A

It’s all about the step up in trip here for the David Simcock-trained CHIRINGITA, who has shaped on more than one occasion as though the step up to 1m will suit, and she gets the chance to prove it here on Handicap debut. She plugged on to finish third in what looked a hot race over 7f at Yarmouth last time out, just looking a tad shy of tactical speed. The collateral form is working out really well with two winners coming out of that contest, so it could easily have been a well above average race she was involved in. She could easily have more to offer as she delves into the Handicap ranks for the first time off a mark of 78, and this well-bred sort shouldn’t be discounted for a yard that have been amongst the winners recently.
