The Oddly Premier League: The Alternative League Table, According to the Bookies

Last updated: by Liam Reaney

Ever wondered what the league table would look like if the favourite had always won? The bookies aren’t always right and it doesn’t always go according to the form book.

Best Betting Sites have created the Oddly Premier League using the average final result odds from 20 major bookmakers for every Premier League game, to find out which team the bookies think should have won.

The resulting league table shows which teams are favoured most by the bookies, and which teams are defying expectations.

Every month, we update the Oddly Premier League table based on the games just gone.

How the Table Differs

If every result had gone according to the pre-match odds, the Premier League table would be looking very different. Some sides have outperformed all expectations, while others have fallen well short of what bookmakers predicted. Here’s a breakdown of who’s overachieving, who’s underachieving, and which teams are performing exactly to form.

Over Achievers

Sunderland

It will come as no surprise to most that Sunderland are the biggest overachievers this season, with their unbelievable start to life in the top flight even catching the bookies by surprise. According to the Oddly Premier League, pre-match odds suggested that Sunderland would be in the bottom three, with 16 less points than they actually have.

Brentford

Brentford were a team that were tipped by many as relegation candidates following the departure of Thomas Frank. Pre-match odds reflected this, with them sitting 19th in the Oddly table with 13 points less than their real life total.

Burnley

While they’re still in a relegation battle, the bookies expected Burnley to be doing much worse. They sit bottom of our Oddly table, with 7 points fewer than they’ve actually won.

Under Achievers

Liverpool

Title favourites Liverpool started the season on fire, but a run of defeats not predicted by the bookies has seen them drop off in the real Premier League table. The Oddly Premier League has them sitting joint top, with pre-match odds suggesting they should have 12 more points than they do.

Chelsea

The bookies also fancied Chelsea this season, as they sit joint top of the Oddly table. Pre-match odds would have them at 30 points, instead of their current 20.

Manchester City

After a slow start to the season, City have started to put pressure on leaders Arsenal. Bookies had them down as one of the title favourites pre-season, with pre-match odds expecting them to have 8 points more than they have.

True to Form

Spurs

It might seem surprising given some of their results this season, but Spurs actually have the exact amount of points in real life as their pre-match odds suggested- just not in the way the bookies expected! This is due to underwhelming results like their draw at home to Wolves being balanced out by surprise victories against the likes of Manchester City.

Bournemouth

Iraola’s side also have exactly the same points total in the Oddly Premier League as the real one, sitting 9th in both tables with 18 points.
