The Oddly Championship: The Alternative League Table, according to the odds

Last updated: by Liam Reaney

We’ve rebuilt the Championship table using pre-match betting odds from 20 major bookmakers to show how the season would look if every match had gone the way the bookies expected.

By taking the average full-time result odds before each game, we calculated which team was the favourite and used that to create the Oddly Championship by Best Betting Sites.

The resulting league table shows which teams are most under and overrated by the bookies. If the bookies favourite had always won, where would your team be?

The Oddly Championship Table for November

Every month, we update the Oddly Championship table based on the games just gone.

How the Table Differs

If pre-match odds had been correct every week, the Championship table would look dramatically different. Some sides have outperformed all expectations, while others have fallen well short of what bookmakers predicted. Here’s a breakdown of who’s overachieving, who’s underachieving, and which teams are performing exactly to form.

Over Achievers

Preston North End

Preston have defied the bookies more than anyone else on the list, with 14 points more than pre-match odds suggested. Upsets against the likes of Leicester, Middlesbrough and Derby have made them one of the season’s biggest surprise packages.

Hull City

Big home wins against underperforming Southampton and Leicester sides have helped Hull on their way to 10 more points than the bookies expected.

Derby County

Points against last season’s relegated Premier League trio see Derby performing eight points above expectation with the highlight being their away win against Sheffield United.

Under Achievers

Sheffield United

Unsurprisingly, biggest underperformers are Sheffield United, currently 20 points worse off than the Oddly table. Replacing Rubén Sellés with Chris Wilder has done little to stop the rot, with the Blades currently in the relegation zone.

Leicester City

Despite being bookies favourites almost every week, Leicester have failed to live up to expectations, underperforming by 18 points. Shock defeats to the likes of Preston and Hull have the Foxes sitting comfortably mid-table despite being pre-season favourites for promotion.

Southampton

18 points behind their expected total, Southampton manager Will Still paid the price for their underperformance. The Saints were expected to make a push for an immediate return to the Premier League but instead sit in the bottom half of the table.

True to Form

Stoke City

A special mention to Stoke City with zero difference compared to what the bookies expected. Both the Oddly and actual Championship table have the Potters on 27 points, although that’s only enough for 10th place in our table and not the 3rd place Stoke currently occupy.
