Next Celtic Manager Betting Odds: Ange Favourite to Return to Paradise
Last updated: by Leon Marshall
The circus has moved to the other side of Glasgow, with Celtic now on the hunt for a new manager after a dramatic exit from Brendan Rodgers. The writing has been on the wall for a while with the turgid displays, backhanded digs at the board, and falling behind in the title race. Fans have woken up today thinking they are back in 2004, with Martin O’Neill ushered in as interim manager.

Ange Postecoglou – 1/1
Unsurprisingly, recently dismissed Forest manager Ange Postecoglou is the bookmaker’s favourite to return to Celtic at odds of 1/1. Given Ange’s excellent relationship with the fans, who are already posting across social media for Ange to come home, and his past success with the club, this appointment would be a no-brainer for the board in an attempt to get fans back onside with their running of the club.
The only question mark around the appointment is whether Ange would be keen for a return. After a less-than-impressive spell at Forest, the Australian might feel he still has something to prove at a higher level and a return to Celtic might do his reputation more harm than good.
Martin O’Neill – 7/1
In a hilarious turn of events, Martin O’Neill was appointed as the club’s interim manager after talking up Hearts to win the title just eight hours before. At 7/1, he is the second favourite currently for the role, and it’s hard to argue against the fact that he is a strong fit for the club.
You would be hard-pressed to find many on the shortlist who know Celtic better than O’Neill after his successful stint between 2000 and 2005. Although this Celtic squad is a far cry from O’Neill’s, swapping Henrik Larsson up front for Johnny Kenny is no easy feat, even for a manager as experienced as the Northern Irishman.
Shaun Maloney – 8/1
Surprisingly, Shaun Maloney is right behind O’Neill in the latest odds at 8/1. Coming in as O’Neill’s right-hand man in the interim, the ex-Celtic player is considered a far outsider for the role, and we expect these odds to drop considerably as the search goes on.
Personally, we think the manager role would be too much for Maloney at this stage of his career, after he struggled at Hibs and then Wigan in the lower tiers of English football.
Kjetil Knutsen – 8/1
Currently sitting alongside Maloney at 8/1 is Bodø/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen. The three-time Eliteserien coach of the year will be a familiar name to many Celtic fans after his side hammered them 5-1 on aggregate in the Europa League just a few seasons ago, and we think he is a solid bet for anyone who doesn’t think Ange will return.
Knutsen’s side is often praised for their attacking, exciting football – something that Celtic fans not only expect, but demand from their team these days. The fact that he is a serial winner with four league titles in the last five years only boosts his credentials for the role. The only question is, would he be willing to leave a team that he has built from the ground up, or is he ready for a “step-up”?
The Outsiders
There are two names we noticed that will have die-hard Celtic fans losing their minds at the prospect of them taking charge. They are both very long odds, but we’ve seen crazier things happen in football, and there’s no doubt that both managers would get the fans flocking to Parkhead.
Scott Brown – 20/1
A certified Celtic legend, probably only beaten by the next potential manager on this list, Scott Brown is currently 20/1 to return to Celtic, this time in the dugout instead of on the pitch.
While the multiple trophy-winning captain would be warmly welcomed by the fans, it seems unlikely that the board will consider him for the position. Brown is only early on in his management career, finally starting to build some sort of reputation at Ayr after an uninspiring spell at Fleetwood Town. Like we said, though, crazy things happen in football.
Henrik Larsson – 33/1
Could the King return to Parkhead? Well, going by the bookmakers, it seems unlikely at odds of 33/1. Despite being the greatest player in the club’s history, we doubt that the board would take such a risk during a season that has already gone pear-shaped.
Larsson has only managed teams in Sweden, and not very successfully. So even though some fans would love to see him back at Parkhead, this one seems unlikely to ever happen.
