The story of 888 starts in 1997 when two sets of Israeli brothers – Aaron and Avi Shaked and Ron and Shay Ben-Yitzhak established Virtual Holdings Limited. Casino-on-Net was launched at the same time and their administrative centre was established in Antigua.

Reef Club Casino and Pacific Poker brands were added in 2002, in 2003 they moved operations to Gibraltar. 2005 saw the company floated on the London Stock Exchange with a valuation of £590 million. In 2006 they took the decision to bring all the subsidiaries they owned under a single brand, so 888 was born! This was also the year that Ladbrokes and 888.com announced merger discussions, however, this never came to fruition.

In 2013, 888sport became a customer of Kambi Sport Solutions, which would deliver a fully managed sportsbook for 888. The Kambi offering was a vast improvement on 888 Sports ‘ previous sportsbook. The deal was a win/win for Kambi as it allowed them to add British horse racing to the services they offered clients.

For punters, this has a downside in that the odds you see at 888sport are very unlikely to be the best on the market, the odds you see in the sportsbook are the same you will find at Unibet and other companies. This isn’t altogether bad but you are unlikely to see a variance worth taking advantage of, for a recreational player this will be fine, for professional players we would recommend another company such as Coral.

888sport is rated excellently, but it is not perfect! I’m still not overly keen on the design, it’s functional, sure, but in some ways it reminds me of the old teletext or Ceefax services from the 80s. Maybe that is being a bit harsh and like a few girlfriends have told me in the past, “looks are not everything!”

So let’s recap on what is good, I really love the quantity of bets! Take for example a Champions League game, Dynamo Kiev v Manchester City there is an amazing 331 different topics to bet on. That is crazy and really opens up the acca possibilities.

In this 888sport review, the news and views articles on their blog really stood out, there I read a good article about betting on Baseball, not a market I had really much knowledge on except a few bets on the New York Yankees. The article explained that research has shown that betting on the underdog can pay dividends. This has certainly piqued our interest, so we will do some research on this emerging market and we will, of course, share our findings with you.

We also loved the statistical data that is available within the site, you can compare previous head to head meetings, look at form and even drill down to individual player’s statistics. Regular visitors to this site will know that we love our stats so well done 888 for making these so accessible.

Placing a bet is straightforward and hassle-free and despite our misgivings on the design, it is logically thought out and is certainly not the worst we have ever seen. The orange colour scheme makes the sections stand out and easy to navigate.

As we have mentioned in the review, you are unlikely to find this site useful for arbitrage betting, but more for a site to place casual bets, quickly, safely and at a respectable price. If you don’t have an account, then this makes a worthwhile addition to your sports book collection.
