All of our recommended sites are fully regulated and licenced by the UK Gambling Commission.
Water Polo Betting Odds Levels
The level of odds that a company offers can tell if they provide excellent value for money. After all, we all want to use a company that isnāt just interested in profits and provides a fair deal for the customer. The better odds, the more returns you will see. With this in mind, weāve compared the five water polo betting sites we recommended.
Average Payout Level For Top Water Polo Events | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Event: | Coral | 10bet | Betfred | bwin |
FINA World League | 92.11% | 90.33% | 90.66% | 89.87% |
World Club Challenge | 90.21% | 88.58% | 89.96% | 90.01% |
LEN Champions League | 87.25% | 91.26% | 90.52% | 91.54% |
Olympics | 89.36% | 89.01% | 90.78% | 89.86% |
As you can see from the table above, our recommended sites offer somewhat similar odds levels with only a slight variance between the operators. However, what it does show is that there is value in shopping around. Many punters have more than one bookmaker they use; this allows them to compare at a glance who offers the best deal. Another benefit of having multiple accounts is being able to claim more than one new customer offer.
Water Polo Markets on Offer
One of the biggest frustrations you will encounter when betting on water polo is finding a bookmaker that accepts bets on the sport. So, you may ask how to bet on water polo then? Our recommended sites all feature games, but the number of markets available will depend on the popularity of the event. The final of the Men’s Water Polo World League Europa Cup, for example, will have more betting opportunities than the FINA World Men’s Junior Water Polo Championships.
Markets Available at Each Operator | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Event | Coral | 10bet | Betfred | bwin |
FINA World League | 20 | 21 | 22 | 24 |
World Club Challenge | 22 | 20 | 21 | 22 |
LEN Champions League | 23 | 24 | 22 | 22 |
Olympics | 26 | 26 | 26 | 22 |
As you can see from the table above, all our operators offer a similar selection of betting markets. The typical betting types such as which team will win are available at all our featured bookmakers. Top events such as the Olympics offer a lot more choice of what you can bet on; we cover what you can bet on later in this guide and discuss the common water polo bets placed by punters.
Water Polo Bonuses and Promotions
What sets online water polo betting apart from using a high street bookmaker is the ability to claim some generous bonuses. As competition is fierce between the bookies, they will all offer incentives for you to join them ā these range from free bets to the operator matching your first deposit.
Our top-rated site, Coral, will give you up to Ā£50 with their 50% matched deposit offer. You simply make your first deposit, and they will credit your account with 50% of your first deposit figure. You deposit Ā£20; they will give you Ā£10, top-up your account with Ā£100 and they will provide you with Ā£50 back. As there are terms and conditions to this offer, we strongly recommend you check the fine print of all special offers. To find out more about bookmakerās deals, we have a dedicated bonus page that explains in more detail.
Live Water Polo Betting
It wasnāt too long ago that if you wanted to bet on an event, you had to ensure your bet was placed before the action started. This stipulation no longer applies when online water polo betting online; you can now place wagers while a game is on.Thanks to live betting (also called in-play betting), you can bet on the match right until the end of the fixture.
Using in-play is really easy to do. Log into your online bookmaker, and in the live section, you will see the water polo game listed. Click on it, and all the match details will be displayed. Depending on what is happening in the game (the scoreline etc.), the odds fluctuate which means that the odds you see could now be better than before the start of the game. If you are aware that one of the teams are slow starters, waiting before you place a bet can be a online water polo betting strategy to consider.
Utilising Cash Out
Another water polo betting strategy to consider is by using another online betting innovation by cashing-out. This facility allows you to end your bet with the bookmaker while the action is still taking place. The bookie will offer you a price to settle your bet, this figure could be higher or lower than your initial stake, depending on what is happening in the game.
To demonstrate this, letās take a recent game between Russia and France in the World League. Russia with home advantage are priced at 17/25 (1.68) whereas France are available at 7/5 (2.70). Imagine if we had placed a Ā£10 bet of France, this would return Ā£24 if the bet was successful. During the game, France takes an early lead, and I check the cash-out value, which is showing as Ā£8. However, the scoreline stays the same, and after 25 minutes, the cash-out value has increased to Ā£14. We fear Russia will fight back so cash-out this bet. It no longer matters what happens in the game, even if Russia win, we have won on a losing bet.
Bet Types Available in Water Polo
As we have mentioned earlier in this guide, in the majority of the āless popularā sports, betting opportunities are minimal, except for high profile events, even at the best betting sites. Which can be quite frustrating, especially if your fond of a particular bet type you like to place but are unable to place it. These are the bet types that are available for the majority of water polo betting games;
Team to Win
We have said that there are not many water polo bets you can place on some games, selecting which team to win bet is, however, available for all games. An easy bet, you are just predicting which team will win. For this type of bet, there will only be one of three outcomes. Either the home team wins, the away team win, or there will be a draw.
An alternative that is available at some bookmakers is the double chance bet. , includes the draw with your prediction. This type of bet is useful when betting on the underdog although the odds are lower than a straight win prediction.
Total Goals
Water polo is all about goals, and a popular wager is the over/under market. Available for most fixtures including domestic leagues and WPWL league fixtures, this bet is easy to place and understand. The bookmaker will set a figure for the total number of goals; you decide if the actual number will be above or below that number. There can never be an exact match as the number selects half of a goal, an event that canāt happen (i.e. 12.5, 13.5 etc.).
Correct Score
The ultimate show of betting genius is to predict what the final score will be in a game. Itās the most unpredictable market, which means the rewards are also the best you can get.
However, just because it is difficult, it doesnāt mean it cannot be done, and experienced punters expect to lose often in this market but understand the pay-outs are excellent when the prediction is correct. Many bookmakers offer statistics on previous encounters between teams to help you decide on what scoreline to predict. Historical data is no guarantee, but it does at least indicate what a likely score could be.
Exclusive Features in Water Polo Betting
With Water Polo betting not being at the top of the priority list for bookmakers, youāll not be surprised that there are no unique promotions or features available for the sport, not even a water polo betting app exists. That, however, doesnāt mean that there are not generic offers that you can take advantage of and use for your bets.
If you like combining your bets to make accumulators, Coral offer their āAcca Plusā. Your first accumulator bet each day will qualify for a 10% winning boost if successful. This could be worth up to Ā£100 daily and is credited as free bets within 24 hours.
New Water Polo Betting Sites
The online sports betting market in the UK is one of the most competitive in the world, but despite being a market that is full of choice, new bookmakers enter the arena all the time. New companies bring fresh ideas and these new operators often embrace change faster than the more traditional companies. We have a page dedicated to the latest bookie additions where you can find out more information on them.
- Ā£30 Bet Free
- Live Results Portal
- Excellent In-Play

For water polo, a new bookmaker worth considering is MoPlay. This newcomer’s unique selling point is the effort they place in obscure and hard-to-find markets. Not only will you find water polo but other emerging sports such as Aussie Rules, badminton and floorball are also featured.
Major Events
Despite its relatively low profile in the UK, worldwide water polo is quite popular, especially in various parts of Europe, the United States, Brazil, China, Canada and Australia. It would be 100 years before womenās teams were able to compete, debuting at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games after political protests which were led by the Australian team.
The most famous Olympic water polo game took place during the 1956 games. In the semi-final, Hungary took on the former Soviet Union. Tensions between the nations were high as the Soviet Unionās army had crushed the Hungarian revolution. The Hungarians were winning 4-0 in the final minute, but the game was called off when the Soviet Unionās Valentin Prokopov punched Ervin Zador. This game would later be referred to as the āBlood in the Water matchā.

Every two years there is water polo played at the FINA World Aquatics Championships. As the name suggests, the tournament is the World Championships for aquatic sports. As well as water polo, other disciplines included are swimming, diving, high diving, open water swimming and artistic swimming.
The tournament, inaugurated in 1973, involves athletes from all 209 FINA associations. The last competition featured 2,623 athletes. Italy top the all-time medal table with four golds, two silver and a bronze. The most decorated player is Serbia and Montenegroās Slobodan NikiÄ who has three golds, one silver and a bronze.
European Water Polo Championship
Organised by the Ligue EuropƩenne de Natation, the European Water Polo Championship is one of the most prestigious events, especially for European players. The tournament was originally a men-only competition when first held in Budapest, Hungary in 1926. The women for the first time competed in 1985 in Oslo, Norway. Water polo was part of the European Aquatics Championships until 1997, it then split in 1999 when it became a tournament in its own right.
Hungary leads the medal table in the menās tournament with twelve gold, six silver and six bronze. The Netherlands have been the most successful womenās team having achieved five golds, four silvers and three bronze medals.
