The sole mention of Paddy Power makes seasoned bettors perk up in their seats. Known for eye-catching commercials, money-back specials and being the centre of the betting industry’s attention, there is one word that will perfectly describe all these traits – unconventional. Check out our Paddy Power review as we put this famously eccentric online bookie to the test.

Everything about Paddy Power seems to be kind of atypical but in a good way. Despite its public image, Ireland’s best bookmaker indeed offers rock-solid betting services. The sportsbook gives you virtually everything – a full range of markets, a great mobile app, live betting and streaming console and an enticing welcome bonus.

New Customers Offer and Other Promotions

At first glance, the Paddy Power sign up offer of £20 may not look as attractive or as generous as other online bookmakers, but when you really look at it, you realise how decent it can be. The thing that really makes this bet stand apart is the fact that it is completely risk-free. Just punt up to £20 on anything you want, and if it loses, you get it back! Nothing to worry about.

How to Get Paddy Power’s Welcome Bonus:

A filled out new customer form on a computer. Open a new account with them.

A completed £10 wager with potential winnings of £14. Bet at least £10 on any market.

People celebrating outside of a Paddy Power land-based betting parlour. Get up to £20 back in cash

For ongoing promotions and special offers then Paddy Power is in a class of its own with so many specials that it would take a website to describe them all, money-back and free bet specials feature heavily at Paddy and at the time of writing this there was 11 listed ranging from football betting free bet (place 5 in-running bets of £5 or more and get a free £5 bet on football the next day) to Basketball, American Football and Baseball free bet offers.

The really great thing about these offers is that the offers change daily and new promotions are continually being added so it always feels fresh and relevant. Another promotion that caught my eye was a “money back as a free bet if your horse finishes 2nd or 3rd”, on one race each day. This is a great little bonus and has rescued us on a few occasions.

  • Place a bet on a featured market.
  • The wager loses with a certain event taking place.
  • You will be rewarded a free bet with the value of your initial one.

Huge Range of Sportsbook Features

No-one comes close to Paddy Power when it comes to pure variety of markets to bet on, as well as the main markets listed above you can also bet on just about anything… When you click on ‘other sports’ on the main page you will see such gems as Croquet, Sumo Wrestling, Cliff Diving, Judo, Pool , Table Tennis and Waterpolo to name just a few!!

From kicking cats to overpaid footballers! We love Paddy Powers TV adverts, they really do enhance its bad-boy image. As we mention in our review, it’s not only the TV adverts that had us laughing out loud, its blog is a fantastic read and we spent many an hour reading the content.

Paddy Power As Seen on TV.

Paddy’s TV adverts are well anticipated! The trouble is, they don’t tend to last long as many of their adverts get banned after a few showings. Luckily you can always visit its website to see any classics you may have missed.

Paddy Power Mobile Betting App Reviewed

It is a real pleasure to just browse Paddy Power’s mobile app, let alone bet on it. The colour scheme and app layout are neat and user-friendly, you will easily find your way to anything you need on the app. On the home screen of the app you will see quick links to the most prominent featured sports and app attributes like in-play cashout. Another cool thing is that when you scroll down any page, the navigation bar at the bottom stays visible. It provides you instant access to the homepage, the promotions hub, all football and horse racing bets or your organised favourites.

Paddy Power Online Sportsbook – How It All Began!

Something that became obvious during our Paddy Power review is that it’s never far from trouble and have a long list of advertising complaints against it that even Lindsay Lohan would be proud of. So how did it all start for the bookie rebels from Ireland? Well like most things connected with Paddy, it isn’t the usual story of a bookmaker who did well in the early 1900’s and then sold out to an investment group!

Paddy Power started in 1988 when three Irish bookmakers decided to merge their businesses, Stewart Kenny, David Power and John Corcoran. The Power surname was considered the strongest name for the brand and they chose Paddy of course to emphasise the Irish connection.

David Power’s son who just happens to be called Paddy is a marketing spokesman for the company and its marketing tactics are why the firm is so controversial. Paddy Power prides itself on being different and in their own words, “ We put customers at the heart of our business, engaged them with pioneering innovations, and listened to them when they told us what they thought. If it tore up the conventions of old-fashioned book-making… so much the better…”

In 2000 the company launched their website Paddy Power and it quickly became one of the market leaders a position they have managed to maintain ever since. This was assisted by a very aggressive expansion strategy and they soon turned the original 40 shops into 195 by 2005 (150 in Ireland and 45 in the UK).

Paddy Power has increased it’s share of the Irish betting market (off-course) from 8% in 1988 to 33% in 2001. To raise money for a UK expansion, Paddy Power was listed in December 2000 on the London Stock Exchange. Paddy Power opened their first shop in the UK in 2002 and by 2014 they had 250 shops in the UK which is more than in Ireland.

In 2004 Paddy Power launched its casino games series with paddypowergames.com and paddypowercasino.com. followed the next year with paddypowerpoker.com and in typical Paddy Power style, it celebrated this by organising the world’s largest strip poker game!

2009 saw Paddy Power concentrate on international expansion with investment in Australia, France and Canada. The next year Paddy Power became the first online bookmaker in Apple’s app store. It was a huge hit and by May 2013 the app had been downloaded over 1 million times and makes up a large percentage of all bets placed with the company.

2013 also saw the crazy people at Paddy Power break the world record for the largest painted sign in history at Melbourne airport. It also opened 75 new shops in the UK and Ireland. Paddy Power is famous for offering controversial bets and guerilla marketing, here are just a few of the stunts that have made them so famous;

  • In November 2008 it offered odds that new President Barrack Obama ‘would not finish’ his first term and this was widely interpreted as the odds on his assassination. It also caused a Twitter-storm when they released pictures that appeared to show part of the Brazilian rain forest cut down to say ‘C’mon England…. PP” they later admitted the pictures were fake but not before it was published in many newspapers.
  • In 2002 Paddy caused outrage in the UK with a photo of 2 old people on a zebra crossing, the company had placed odds bubbles next to the pensioners and as a car is pictured approaching the crossing many took this as betting on which one of the grannies would be run over first.
  • 2005 saw the death of Pope John Paul II, and with Paddy Power never being the sort to miss out on an opportunity it set up a ‘mobile bookmaker’ in St Peter’s Square in Rome and started shouting odds. This resulted in huge media interest and Paddy Power spokesman Ken Robertson was interviewed by more than 90 international TV networks.
  • Again in 2005 it caused further religious outrage by altering Leonardo da Vinci’s infamous ‘last supper’ painting. Instead of Jesus and the apostles eating, the Saints are seen with a stack of poker chips playing cards and roulette.
  • 2010 saw them lead the charts again of ‘most complained about TV advert’, the advert shows a group of blind footballers playing football, as football for the blind is played using a ball with a bell inside. Paddy Power thought it would be funny if a cat wearing a bell ran onto the pitch and one of the players kicked the cat.

So, How Did Paddy Power Score for Online Betting?

What we really love about Paddy is its sense of fun, it don’t take itself too seriously and the humour theme is always present, even on its corporate site. In fact, this review probably took many more hours than it needed to but in all honesty, we loved the content on its pages and took our time reading the many blogs. Paddy Power is not afraid to be different and it does feel like a refreshing change to the many different sites we have reviewed.
