Adonis Juvenile Hurdle Preview – Saturday 27th February
Last updated: February 25, 2021 by Leon Marshal
The 2.25 race at Kempton Park on Saturday is the Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle over two miles. The race is a significant trial for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham with six horses completing the double since 1988. The Adonis has also been won by subsequent Champion Hurdle winners Punjabi (2007) and Binocular (2008). Nicky Henderson has won the race a record five times, most recently with Fusil Raffles in 2019. Last year’s race was won by Solo, trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Harry Cobden.
Tritonic Bids To Underline Triumph Hurdle Claims
Alan King often runs a nice juvenile in this race, and he relies on Tritonic, currently a 12-1 chance for Cheltenham. The son of Sea The Moon is rated 99 on the flat where his best performance was a close second at Royal Ascot last summer. Although he was beaten in his four subsequent races on the level, he continued to perform with credit and was placed in listed company.
Tritonic was gelded in October and made a successful debut over hurdles at Ascot in January. He was held up by Adrian Heskin and finished strongly to beat Casa Loupi by a length, despite a last flight blunder. He will have learned a lot from that experience, and a win here would see his odds shorten for the festival meeting.
Honneur D’Ajonc appeared to be holding Heross Du Seuil when he fell at the final flight here last time out. He had previously finished second to the useful Monmiral at Exeter. The winner followed up in the Grade 2 Summit Juvenile Hurdle before completing a four-timer at Haydock.
Paul Nicholls introduces Paso Doble, rated 84 on the flat when trained in Ireland by Jim Bolger. He won two of his nine races under rules including an £11,000 handicap at Fairyhouse over ten furlongs. He later ran well over longer trips, and the market could provide the best guide to his prospects on Saturday.
Casa Loupi Represents In-Form Gary Moore Stable
The Gary Moore stable had a tremendous boost last weekend when Goshen returned to his best form at Wincanton. They also went close in the Betfair Hurdle on Sunday and have a promising sort here in Casa Loupi. He was rated only 67 on the flat but gave 99-rated Tritonic a run for his money on his hurdles debut at Ascot. The Casamento gelding has won at Kempton on the flat, so should enjoy a spin around here and has excellent place prospects.
Margaret’s Legacy has won both starts over hurdles in France for Hugo Merienne. He is a chestnut gelding by Prince Gibraltar, and both victories came in testing conditions. He is unlikely to get that this weekend and is currently a 50-1 shot for the Triumph. John Locke is unraced over hurdles but won on the flat at Goodwood last September when trained by Ralph Beckett. He is now with Dan Skelton, and his flat rating of 85 makes him an interesting recruit. He will like the drying ground having won on a sound surface on the level.
Soldier On Parade has won three of his five races over hurdles and won on the flat just over a week ago at Lingfield. He was well beaten behind Duffle Coat at Wetherby in October and may struggle in this grade.
Tritonic @11-10 William Hill
Casa Loupi @7-1
Each-way 1/5 odds, 1,2,3
The Adonis Juvenile Hurdle is due off at 2.25 at Kempton Park on Saturday 27th February and will be televised live on ITV4.
