Achilles Stakes Preview – Saturday 29th May
Last updated: May 27, 2021 by Leon Marshal
The 2.20 at Haydock Park on Saturday is the Listed Achilles Stakes over five furlongs. Boogie Street (2004, 2005) is the only previous dual winner, and El Astronaute will be trying to emulate that horse this weekend. John Quinn and Jason Hart teamed up to score with the gelding last year when the race was run at Doncaster.
El Astronaute favourite for Achilles Stakes double
El Astronaute is now eight years of age and has won 14 of his 55 races under rules. His latest success came at Chester when beating King’s Lynn by three-quarters of a length. The son of Approve seems to act on any ground and is always one of the fastest out of the stalls. He could be difficult to peg back.
Moss Gill is prominent in the ante-post betting, despite not having raced since being well beaten at Meydan in March. He won a Listed race at York last summer and ran the race of his life when third to Battaash in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at the same course. He would be very difficult to beat if he could reproduce that effort on Saturday, where he will be sporting cheek-pieces for the first time.
Motagally is up in class after racing in handicaps for Charles Hills. He was a fair third to Desert Doctor at Kempton last October, but he would probably prefer a sound surface. Dubai Station represents Robert Cowell, who also saddles Aljady and Ishvara. The four-year-old has been flying high in Group company but could finish only last of three when dropped to listed grade at Windsor last time.
King’s Lynn chasing Royal victory at Haydock
Her Majesty The Queen enjoyed a couple of victories under National Hunt rules this week. She has a chance of winning a decent prize on the flat here with King’s Lynn. He has always been well regarded at home but disappointed when well supported for last season’s Silver Cup at Ayr. He was only beaten a neck at Ascot next time and was gelded in the Autumn. He has shown plenty of dash in defeat at Newbury and Chester and has obvious each-way claims. Tarboosh finished a never-nearer sixth behind the improved Jabbarockie at Musselburgh last month. That was an encouraging run after wind surgery and a 206-day absence. He is another with form in soft ground and will be bidding to add to his twelve career victories.
Aljady is fit from races at Chelmsford and Newmarket, most recently fifth to Lazuli when fading inside the final furlong. He has winning form in testing conditions and was very consistent last season. He was only out of the frame once, and that was when a close seventh in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood.
Ornate has been a grand servant for connections, winning ten of her 71 career starts. He still possesses plenty of speed and won a Lingfield handicap in March when rated 97. Glamorous Anna is also up against it on official ratings, and she has never raced on ground as soft as she will encounter this weekend.
King’s Lynn @6-1 William Hill
El Astronaute @4-1
Each-way 1/5 odds, 1,2,3
