Competition: Premier League

Former Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho returns to The Theatre of Dreams with his depleted Tottenham side. Mourinho has an impressive record against his former teams, will this continue?

Manchester United’s reputation as Penalty FC may be a tad unfair, but the penalty spot once again came to their rescue in what was a thrilling encounter in their last Premier League game against Brighton Graham Potter’s side hit the woodwork five times, and they were the far superior team on the day, yet somehow went on to lose the game 3-2 thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty that the referee awarded after blowing the final whistle.

Neal Maupay opened the scoring from the penalty spot to give an early lead for Brighton before Lewis Dunk’s own goal levelled for the Red Devils. Marcus Rashford’s sublime solo effort tore the Seagulls defence apart to give United the lead for the first time in the 55th minute. Brighton thought they had secured a point when Solly March headed in a cross from Alireza Jahanbakhshin in the 95th minute. United pressed for the winner and won a corner, from which they appealed for a penalty as the ball had struck Maupay’s hand. The referee appeared to dismiss the claims and blew the whistle for full-time, seconds later he signalled a VAR check was taking place. VAR indicated a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes converted.

United faced the same team four days later in the EFL Cup. This game was less dramatic, and a much more even encounter for periods of the game. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made ten changes, giving game time to fringe players such as Daniel James, Juan Mata, Fred, Scott McTominay, Odion Ighalo against a largely second-string Brighton side. Scott McTominay opened the scoring, heading home from close range from a Juan Mata free-kick. It was the introduction of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford that swung the game in United’s favour. New boy Donny van de Beek’s nice touch found Mata who finished cooly and Pogba’s free-kick found the top corner, via a deflection, to seal the win on 80 minutes.

The Red Devil’s have had a quiet transfer window with Donny van de Beek the only arrival, in some ways a strange addition with much more critical areas of the time that need strengthening. United fans are crying out for the signing of Jadon Sancho, the Borussia Dortmund winger looking a perfect fit for United. The club is, however, baulking at paying the £108m asking price that the German club are demanding. The addition of a left-back and a striker is also on Ole’s shopping list but time is running out with the transfer window closing on Monday.

Jose Mourinho was full of praise for his side after muscling a win against his former player Frank Lampard in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. The manager downplayed his team’s chances before the game but a spirited performance in the second half gave Tottenham victory through penalties after a 1 – 1 full-time score. They showed their resilience with great attacking urgency when they were a goal down, forcing an 83rd-minute equaliser by Erik Lamela to cancel out Timo Werner opener to win 5 – 4 on penalties. Their display was impressive; especially when they were behind, they showed character and determination to fight back and win.

The London club, however, lacks a creative midfielder since Christian Eriksen left for Inter Milan. This gap was evident last season with no talent to feed the scoring boots of Harry Kane and Son. Remarkably it is the England captain who is providing that spark in this campaign, as seen in the game against Southampton. Kane laid on a remarkable four goals which his teammate Son duly converted. The South Korean’s hamstring injury will be a huge blow for Tottenham, especially with so many fixtures coming up.

Sergio Reguilón was a spark for Mourinho’s side and is a clear upgrade to the options that they had. Despite the 23-year-old being the weak link for Timo Werner’s goal, the Spaniard grew into the game and showed off his electric pace. After the break, his side-footed effort was pushed over the crossbar by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, and it was his cross that picked out Lamela for the leveller.

Gareth Bale completed his move to his former club but is still not match fit to make his return in Spurs colours. The 31-year-old has a knee injury which will see him miss Wales’s friendly against England and their Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Bulgaria.

Team News

Man United has no serious injury worries, but lack of reinforcements is a real scare for the Old Trafford faithful. United have conceded five goals in the last two games.

Bruno Fernandez has been UnIteds most lethal player in front of goal since his arrival, being involved in 18 (nine goals and nine assists).

Bale will miss the encounter due to a knee injury as well as Heung-Min Son who came off injured over the weekend against Newcastle.

Mourinho has won more than half of his matches against his former clubs.

Conclusion & Betting Tips

Even the staunchest Manchester United fans will admit that they got away with one in their last Premier League game against Brighton. A 2-3 scoreline was flattering for the hosts who could have easily have conceded at least four more. United’s only signing so far, Donny van de Beek, adds depth, but arguably in a department, they are already well-stocked in.

Tottenham’s fixtures at the moment can only be described as crazy. Premier League Sunday, EFL Cup Tuesday, Europa League Thursday and this huge encounter on Sunday, you do wonder if this will catch up with the team. That said, they do keep winning games, and José Mourinho does love getting one over his former clubs.

Games involving Manchester United and Tottenham are always headline games but very rarely provide classic entertainment, we expect that pattern to continue here. Late drama and a 1-1 draw is our prediction. This scoreline is available @ 23/4 @ 888sport.
