Competition: The Premier League

Manchester City were left disillusioned form dropping their last few matches. After two consecutive defeats in The Premier League and one loss in The Champions League, they need serious improvements in order to maintain their title ambitions. The Citizens started well against Tottenham last weekend, leading 1-0 till the end of the first half. Then Tottenham’s attackers totally outplayed City’s defense, finding the back of the net 4 times. Before this defeat Manchester City had conceded only two goals from 6 games. The last time The Citizens conceded four goals in their net in a competitive game was on the 12th April 2015, when they lost 2-4 to Manchester United at Old Traford.

On the other hand, Newcastle are still waiting for their first league victory this season. The Magpies were so close to doing it against Chelsea in the last round, leading by two goals but Chelsea equalized late in the game. Steve McClaren feels that he is “on target”; Newcastle’s boss say if the team keep losing points, McClaren could eventually be sacked.

Newcastle players find it hard protecting their lead. The scenario from the first round against Southampton (2-2) was repeated in the 6th round against Chelsea. Another weakness in The Magpies’ playing characteristics is that they easily lose possession of the ball. Steve McClaren will have to work really hard on this aspects of the game, in order to start winning points.

Team News

Manchester City’s best defender Vincent Kompany was on the bench last weekend which means he is going to be ready to play against Newcastle. Joe Hart is expected to return to the starting eleven after being an unused substitute in the last Premiership match.

There are a huge number of injured players for Manchester City. Mangala is suffering from a hip injury. Assist leader David Silva received a calf injury and is going to miss the game. Iheanacho, who secured the points against Palace, is also out for the match.

Clichy and Fabian Delph have still not recovered from their long-term injuries and won’t be available for Manuel Pellegrini.

Eight players are sidelined for Newcastle. P. Cisse is suffering from a back injury and won’t take part in the match. Also amongst the injured players are Haidara, Aarons, Darlow, Taylor, Tiote, Dummett and Riviere.

32-year-old Yaya Toure is still performing at the top level. The Ivorian has scored one goal and has assisted four times from the beginning of the season. He has the second best ranking from all of City’s players from the first seven Premiership games. His passes will be crucial if they are to play at their usual level.
