Glorious Goodwood 2017 Special

Last updated: July 28, 2017 by Leon Marshal

Glorious Goodwood 2017 gets under way on Tuesday 1st August and runs for five days. It often attracts many of the horses successful at Royal Ascot and takes place at one of the most scenic racecourses in the world.

Last year’s Goodwood meeting opened with Group 2 victories for War Decree (Vintage Stakes) and Dutch Connection (Lennox Stakes). The highlight of Day 2 was a win for The Gurkha in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes. Ulysses won the Group 3 Gordon Stakes for Sir Michael Stoute while Yalta won the Molecomb Stakes.

Big Orange won the Goodwood Cup for a second time on day 3 and will be back again this year. There were also Group race wins for Mehmas (Richmond Stakes) and California (Lillie Langtry Stakes). Punters enjoyed their best day of the week on Friday with five winning favourites. The heavily backed Franklin D won the Betfred Mile with Take Cover winning the Group 2 King George Stakes. There was more joy for punters on Saturday as Dancing Star landed a gamble in the Stewards’ Cup. Minding took the Group 1 Nassau Stakes for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore.

We take a look at this year’s top races and highlight the best bonuses on offer with the leading bookmakers.

Glorious Goodwood Preview and Betting Tips

The Goodwood Cup has been moved to the opening day this year where all eyes will be on Big Orange. Michael Bell’s popular six-year-old refused to be denied by Order Of St George at Royal Ascot, holding on by a short-head.

Racing fans had been hoping to see the two lock horns again at Goodwood but Aidan O’Brien has elected to run Order Of St George elsewhere. That should leave the way clear for an historic third win in the race for Big Orange where his biggest threat may come from the improving Dal Harraild.

The seven furlong Group 2 Lennox Stakes looks an ideal opportunity for Librisa Breeze. The grey finished an unlucky fourth in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs. This is his ideal trip and he acts on all types of ground. Godolphin’s Dream Castle pulled too hard in the Jersey Stakes and has a chance of reversing the form with runner-up Spirit of Valor.

Duel on the Downs

The feature race on day 2 is the £1million Group 1 Sussex Stakes over a mile. O’Brien cannot be accused of dodging the issue here as he prepares to take on Ribchester with dual 2000 Guineas winner Churchill.

The colt’s disappointing run at Royal Ascot remains something of a mystery but he was never travelling at any stage. Churchill will need to be at his best to beat Ribchester who has been impressive in the Lockinge Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes this season.

Feature Goodwood

Winter steps up in trip for Nassau Stakes

The English and Irish 1000 Guineas winner Winter is the star attraction in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes on Thursday. The grey beat her better-fancied stable companion Rhododendron at Newmarket and was even more impressive at the Curragh.

Aidan O’Brien’s filly tackles a quarter for the first time and bids to emulate Minding who won for the yard last year. She is also taking on her elders for the first time including Sir Michael Stoute’s Queen’s Trust, runner-up a year ago and a subsequent Breeders’ Cup winner.

Brilliant Battaash can blaze the trail

The one to watch on Friday is the dashing Battaash in the five furlong £300,000 Group 2 King George Stakes. This track looks tailor-made for him and it will take a good one to reel him in. He won’t have things all his own way with last year’s winner Take Cover also in the line-up.

The big betting race of the day is the Betfred Mile. The draw often has a big say in the outcome here with horses drawn high at a big disadvantage. Blair House has a great chance if able to reproduce his second place in the Royal Hunt Cup.

The final day features the Stewards’ Cup over six furlongs. Roger Charlton’s Projection is the early favourite after his excellent third in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot. He has plenty of early pace and just needs a bit of luck in running to land a big prize.
