Cheveley Park Stakes Preview – Saturday 29th September
Last updated: September 28, 2018 by Leon Marshal
Newmarket stages a top quality card on Saturday featuring two Group 1 races and the Cambridgeshire Handicap. The Group 1 action begins at 2.25 with the £275,000 Cheveley Park Stakes for two-year-old fillies over six furlongs.
The race has been won by some top class fillies in the past. Ma Biche (1982), Ravinella (1987), Sayyedati (1992), Natagora (2007) and Special Duty (2009) all went on to win the 1000 Guineas the following season.
Pretty Pollyanna and Signora Cabello set for rematch
Michael Bell’s Pretty Pollyanna is currently favourite for the 1000 Guineas next season. She repelled the persistent challenge of Signora Cabello to win the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville last month. That followed a stunning seven lengths victory in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at the Newmarket July meeting.
Pretty Pollyanna and Signora Cabello had the race between themselves, pulling four lengths clear of True Mason in third. That colt ran well in defeat in last weekend’s Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury. Silvestre de Sousa has allowed Pretty Pollyanna to bowl along at the head of affairs in her last two races. There seems no reason to change tactics here.
Signora Cabello is trained by John Quinn and is a daughter of Camacho out of a Night Shift mare. She has won four of her six races, including a narrow success in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. She beat Gossamer Wings by a short head before following up by a similar margin in the Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte.
Fairyland leads O’Brien challenge
Aidan O’Brien has a typically strong entry, led by Fairyland. She is by Kodiac out of Queenofthefairies by Pivotal and has won three of her four races. She was third to Main Edition in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. Fairyland then got the better of The Mackem Bullet by a nose in a thrilling finish to the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York.
So Perfect beat Skitter Scatter at the Curragh in July. The runner-up has been a revelation since stepping up to seven furlongs, winning her next three races. So Perfect then finished second to Advertise in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, beaten half a length. That looked a weak Group 1 with The Irish Rover close-up in third and Sergei Profokiev running below form in fifth. Gossamer Wings completes the O’Brien team and is set to race in blinkers for the first time. The Scat Daddy filly has not quite lived up to the promise of her Royal Ascot form.
Queen Of Bermuda is a filly by Exceed And Excel out of a mare by Haafhd trained by William Haggas. She has had a busy season, winning four of her eight starts. She proved far too good for her rivals in heavy ground in the Firth Of Clyde Stakes at Ayr last weekend. The Mackem Bullet is very closely matched with Fairyland while Angel’s Hideaway is difficult to fancy after a poor effort at York.
Lady Kaya could be the biggest danger to the front two in the betting. She travelled beautifully in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes last time but failed to see out the seven furlongs trip. A fast run six furlongs could be ideal for her.

Lady Kaya @10-1
