How Do Accumulators Work? Easy Guide to Accumulator Betting

Accumulator betting is one of the most exciting forms of betting available at online sports betting sites, it brings you the chance to win big, and we mean BIG! Accumulators are the ultimate test of sport betting skill. The more selections you make, the bigger the pay-off but this also increases the chances of at least one of your selections failing. Are you brave enough?

In this easy to follow guide I consider the wonderful world of accumulator betting (acca’s). I will show you how easy it is to place accumulators, I also tell you which online sports betting site we recommend for football and horse racing and why.

I also share some success stories and the occasions it didn’t go to plan. If you are new to acca betting, don’t worry I have your back and soon you’ll be placing accumulators like a pro.

What is an Accumulator Bet?

An accumulator bet is a single bet that brings together multiple bets. For an accumulator to be successful, each of your predictions must be correct. A lot of bookies will offer promotions that will refund your stake if just one of your selections lets you down. Some online betting sites will also give you a bonus which increases the more selections you make, we will discuss this in more detail later.

On an accumulator, your winnings from one prediction carry onto the next prediction you have made. This means your winnings are much higher than if you placed a series of single bets. Let’s have a look at an example.

These games took place on the 1st of April, we are predicting home wins for all 8 fixtures (not likely I know!). This table shows the return on a single bet of £5.

Game Odds Return on £5
Liverpool v Everton 8/13 £8.07
Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur 9/2 £27.50
Chelsea v Crystal Palace 2/7 £6.42
Hull City v West Ham United 6/4 £12.50
Leicester City v Stoke City 1/1 £10
Manchester United v West Bromwich Albion 1/4 £6.25
Watford v Sunderland 4/5 £9
Southampton v Bournemouth 4/7 £7.85

So, to place all these bets as singles would cost £40 and give you a return of £87.59.

Now let’s have a look at the same sequence of games but this time as one accumulator bet and how the amount changes.

Game Odds Cumulative total
Liverpool v Everton 8/13 £8.07
Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur 9/2 £44.38
Chelsea v Crystal Palace 2/7 £57.06
Hull City v West Ham United 6/4 £142.65
Leicester City v Stoke City 1/1 £285.30
Manchester United v West Bromwich Albion 1/4 £356.62
Watford v Sunderland 4/5 £641.91
Southampton v Bournemouth 4/7 £1008.71

On an 8 folds acca the odds are 201.74/1, this means for £5, you would see a return of £1,008.71. Even by this simple example, you can see why acca bets are huge with punters.

For a relatively small outlay, you can win a substantial amount of money. The downside is that there is no margin for error, get one result wrong and you don’t see a return.

Types of bet Number of bets Cost of bet at £5 Potential return
Single 8 £40 £87.59
Eight-fold 1 £5 £1008.71

How to Place an Accumulator Bet

I have discussed why accumulator bets are so popular, let’s now look at how easy accumulator bets are to place. All you need to do is follow the same process as placing a single bet but instead of confirming your bet, you continue to pick more selections.

Step One Acca Step 1: Pick as many selections as you like then click on “Bet Slip” Step Two Acca Step 2: A summary is shown, click on “Multiple Options” Step Three Acca Step 3: A List of possible bets is shown Step Four Acca Step 4: In the stake box, enter the bet amount and press “Place Bet”

It really is that easy! The screenshots are taken from bet365 but the process is almost identical at all the best betting sites.

The One That Got Away!

One of the biggest challenges with betting with accumulators is managing your expectations. It’s important to understand the likelihood of all your selections coming in is low. The more selections you make, the winnings get higher but also the likelihood of at least one of the results going against you.

I’ve had some great wins from not a lot of money, I recently had a double on Lincoln City and Sutton Utd in the FA Cup. What made this bet so satisfying was that the bet was placed in-play at half-time.

I was listening to one game on the radio and watching the other on TV and it just felt that we could have a double shock result. Wimbledon who were playing Sutton had been reduced to 10-men and with both games at 0-0. What made this bet so memorable was that the winning goals in BOTH games were scored in the last few minutes, exciting stuff.

Picking an Acca Winner thumb

So now the flip-side. I had a £3 seven-fold and one by one they came in. I was being offered more and more money to cash out and walk away from the bet. Six of my selections had already won and I just needed West Ham to beat Watford. As you can see the odds for this was 9/5, so West Ham were expected to win. Alas, it was not to be, the game ended 1-1 and even to the last second there was a chance the bet would win.

I did have a Six-fold on another bet that came in so it wasn’t all bad news. Just not the £1,100ish I would have won. However, the excitement I felt that day was incredible and the total cost of my bets were only £10.

Best Betting Site for Football Accumulators

Now you know how easy it is, you’re aware of the benefits and you’ve shared both my joy and my sadness! So, it’s time for me to share which I feel is the best online betting site for placing football accumulators. My choice without hesitation is betway!

> Join betway’s team to get £10 free every week! <

Now betway don’t always give the best odds for football matches, I would say Betvictor offer consistently the better football odds, but rather betway excel for their “free bet club”. This promotion is built with footy accas in mind. If you place £25 a week on accumulators, then betway will award you with £10 in free bets every week.

These bets soon add up. I really like the fact with this promotion the minimum odds are set at 2/1. This is incredibly generous, I would have expected a lot higher requirement so well done betway!
