The Best Badminton Betting Sites in the UK

Last updated: by Leon Marshal

Badminton may not enjoy the same popularity as tennis, but badminton betting sites are increasingly becoming a destination for punters looking for new experiences. In our ultimate guide to the sport, we will compare odd levels at the different operators, what events you can bet on, discuss why you should consider ‘live betting’ and much more. If you have any questions, you’ll find them answered here!

Despite being a popular sport to play, badminton doesn’t have the spectator following enjoyed by other sports. This means that the sport isn’t a mainstay at all online sports betting sites. However, fear not as we have done all the legwork for you and checked all the legal and regulated online operators and picked our favourites. In the next section, we present our top five badminton betting sites, and why we chose them!

The Top Badminton Betting Sites and Why

What makes a badminton online betting bookie the ‘best’ is often subjective and will depend on what your needs are; however, certain aspects are non-negotiable and allow us to compare sites side by side. One of the headline figures we look at is how generous the odds that the company offer are? Better odds mean a higher pay-out and are a good indicator of a decent bookmaker.

You can see the odds for five bookmakers offer for badminton online betting in the table above. The higher the figure means a higher return to player number (RTP). A decent operator would consistently pay out around the 90% mark. We have also included in our table the minimum and maximum deposit limits as well as collating all the various welcome offers available. Here are the top 5 badminton betting sites per category:

Badminton Betting Odds Levels Per Competition

In the previous section, we presented the odds levels for our chosen five bookmakers across all the sports they offered, and in this section, we take that one stage further and break down the odds the operators provide for a badminton event. As this sport can be fairly infrequent with tournaments, we have used historical data from the popular Hyperbad games.

Average Payout Level for Top Badminton Events
League
Hyberbad Open Men’s96.98%94.32%95.05%94.13%96.98%
Hyberbad Open Men’s Doubles96.32%92.01%92.42%91.01%96.32%
Hyberbad Open Women’s92.99%90.31%92.44%93.34%92.99%
Hyberbad Open Women’s Doubles92.92%89.23%89.96%93.32%92.92%

To calculate these figures, we chose 20 random games that took place at the Hyperbad Open badminton tournament for the men’s game and worked out the pay-out percentage for each of these games to give us an average. We repeated the process for the women’s game and then finally for the double’s competition in both the men’s and women’s games.

Markets on Offer

We have already discussed that not all bookmakers accept bets on this sport, so a big part of your badminton betting strategy is to find a bookmaker you like but also one that accepts these kinds of bets. All our recommended sports betting sites offer the top events; in this section we take four of the biggest tournaments and check how many markets our sites provide.

Badminton Markets Available at Each Operator
League
Hyberbad Open2220222122
BWF World Championship1517151616
BWF World Championship1517151616
Thomas Cup2624222525

As you can see from the table above, there is little difference between the bookmakers in terms of markets offered for badminton betting during major tournaments. During the Hyperbad Open, all bookmakers offered a similar choice ranging from tournament winner to detailed predictions on a match per match basis. This pattern was repeated in the BWF World Championship, Asia Championships and the Thomas Cup.

Badminton Bonuses and Promotions Online

As it is still considered a niche market, unlike the top sports such as football, rugby and horse racing, you’ll not find promotions that are aimed directly at badminton betting. This, however, doesn’t mean you cannot take advantage of promotions, just that the offers you can take advantage of are very generic and are not specialised to the sport.

A firm favourite with online sports betting fans is the new customer offer that you can claim when you sign up with a bookmaker. As we discussed in our top-rated William Hill review for example, you can get three free £10 bets when you bet just £10. An almost identical deal is also available if you visit our 888sport review, and as mentioned in our Ladbrokes review it also triples your initial stake, however, the minimum bet with them is just £5, ideal if you are betting on a budget.

Live Badminton Betting

The great aspect of betting online as opposed to a traditional bookmaker is taking advantage of new innovations operators introduce. One of these is the ability to bet on the action as it happens. Not so long, once an event started, the bookmaker would “close the book”, and you had to rely on bets you had made pre-match.

In-Play Platforms at the Best Badminton Betting Sites

This closing of the book is no longer the case, “In-play” or “live betting” that is available at all the best online sports betting sites, enables you to bet on the action as it happens. This opens up a new dimension to your badminton betting strategy and armed with a knowledge of the sport; you can turn this into profit. If an underdog has a surprise lead, but you are sure that the favourite will fight back? No problem, you can often bet until the last moments of a game.

Utilising Cash Out at Badminton Betting Sites

Alongside in-play betting, another innovation that has transformed how we bet has been the ability to cash out entirely or partially a bet. A far cry from the previous “bet and forget” culture, bookmakers now give you a chance to cash-out your bets, even if your bet is in a losing position. Which when things are not going well, can at least allow you to rescue some of your stake and use it at a different time.

The ability to cash out your bet also adds a tactical side to betting that didn’t exist before. Let’s imagine that world number one Kento Momota is playing Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke in a game. Gemke is the underdog, but I suspect he will start off well but then fade. A good tactic is to bet on Gemke in the hope of a good start but then cash out the bet when the favourite starts to gain control.

Bet Types Available in Badminton

If you are wondering how to bet on badminton, it is straightforward. In this section, we will take a look at some of the most popular bets that get placed on the sport. The amount of bet types you will see at an online bookmaker depends on the popularity of the event. The best betting sites will offer a variety. A regional game, for example, may just have the winner market, whereas a major tournament will have many more things to bet on.

Player to Win

Badminton player The simplest bet you can make when betting on badminton, you are predicting which player will be the outright winner at the end of the game. It’s either player A or player B. This type of bet is offered for all games both domestically and abroad and is available at all bookmakers. For major tournaments, this market will often be available months before the event. For this reason, this betting market is a popular market for those in the know who will place bets on up and coming talent, as a player becomes more successful, the odds drop.

Winning Margin

A badminton scoreboard As a game is a race to 21 points, a popular bet among punters is the number of points a game will be won by. For example, player a is playing player b. And we are confident that player a will not only win but triumph by over 10 points. This bet type pays out more than a simple ‘to win’ bet. This is a badminton betting strategy we tend to use when one of the top 10 players is facing someone unranked. The odds are admittedly not often that great, but a win is a win in our eyes!

Team to Win

A badminton player celebrating In the same way, you can back a player to win a tournament; you can also back a team to be victorious in international competitions. Running since 1949, the Thomas Cup competition was the brainchild of George Alan Thomas who wanted to create a ‘World Cup’ like football’s, for badminton. Running every two years, the Thomas Cup (also called the World Men’s Team Championships) brings the best players in the sport together. Even though the event has been running for over 70 years, only four teams have ever won the competition. Indonesia have been crowned champs 13 times, followed by China on ten and Malaysia on 5. Denmark and Japan are the other winners with one win each.

Emerging Features in Badminton Betting

Unfortunately, there are no emerging features that are exclusive to badminton but punters wanting to bet on the sport can take advantage of general sports betting innovations such as live betting which we discussed in detail earlier on this page. The cash-out facility is also available for large events.

There is also a lack of a virtual games at badminton betting apps which is a shame, other sports including tennis, football and horse racing all have virtual representations of the sport which are all great fun and you to bet on them at anytime of the day and night.

New Badminton Betting Sites

While it is reassuring to use online sports betting brands that are well known and trusted, new companies are entering the market all the time. Often these new brands offer new features, promotions and unique special offers. In this section, we highlight a couple of new sites that are worth considering. All the websites we recommend are fully licensed and regulated.

Popular Badminton Sports Betting Events

Now we have covered how to bet on badminton and have recommended a few sites for you to consider, in this section, we will take a look at the biggest and best badminton tournaments and competitions you can bet on. You’ll find betting on these events is available at all the sites we feature.

Olympic Games

Badminton betting at the Olympic Games. Arguably the greatest sports event on the planet, the Olympic Games is watched and loved by millions around the world. Hosted every four years, the Olympics brings together the finest athletes. Badminton first appeared as a demonstration sport at the 1972 Summer Olympics and once again in 1988. In 1992 in Barcelona, Spain, badminton became a fully-fledged Olympic sport and remains one today. China is the most successful team at the Olympics at badminton, winning 41 medals that include the tally of the most successful player Gao Ling. Gao Ling is the all-time leader for the most Olympic medals in badminton, with two gold, one silver, and one bronze.

Commonwealth Games

Badminton betting at the Commonwealth Games. You may have noticed that Britain has been starved of badminton success at the highest level with countries from Asia perennially dominating a sport that was initially invented in England. For the last British major win, you need to turn to the Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games are attended by 53 states, all of which were formally part of the British Empire (except Myanmar and Aden who decided not to join). Badminton first appeared at the Games in 1966 and England won the Best Nation Award in badminton, they would retain this award for 32 years until Malaysia took the title in 1998.

BWF Badminton World Championships

Badminton betting at the BWF Badminton World Championships. The BWF sanctions the BWF World Championships (formerly known as IBF World Championships) and uniquely for a sporting event, it doesn’t offer any prize money for the players, just medals. Unlike most prestigious world tournaments, only 20 countries have achieved at least a bronze medal in the competition: ten in Asia, eight in Europe, one in North America and one in Oceania. This means Africa is the only confederation that has not won a medal. Since the first Championship in 1977, China has been dominant and have won a total of 66 medals. Amazingly China won every medal on offer in 1987, 2010 and 2011.
